The multihull taken out of the Olympic program was to most multihull sailors a big shock. Being one of the most spectacular sailing classes around, therefore we are happy that ISAF and IOC will bring the multihull back for the next Olympic cycle. At Nacra we have studied the criteria thoroughly and submit two boats (Nacra F16 and Nacra 17) of which we are convinced will meet the ISAF criteria and will challenge the world elite sailors. Boats that proven to be true Nacra multihulls; quick, agile, exciting, durable, value for money.
The Nacra 17 is specifically designed to meet the ISAF criteria for the mixed multihull trials. The Nacra 17 is representing multihull sailing 2.0: faster and stronger.
Trials Santander
At the trials held in Santander it showed us that ISAF truly has the best intentions for sailing in the Olympics in general. They were well organized, lots of questions asked by the committee and the sailors. A true test for every boat and manufacturers organization. The testing sailor couples unanimous choose the Nacra 17 as best option for the use as the Olympic mixed multihull in the many years to come. During this week it got a bit overwhelming for the complete support team of Nacra present on how well this 2.0 multihull was received over the other competitors. For ISAF all options are out on the table now and it is up to them to make the choice for not only the best boat. Other aspects are taken into account as well like who could handle logistics the best, production, marketing, support to MNA’s and sailors etc etc.
NACRA 17 Nacra is submitting two multihulls, the Nacra F16 and the Nacra 17. Although the F16 meets most of the ISAF criteria, the Nacra F17 is specially developed to meet the ISAF criteria.
For the design the Nacra team again joined forces with world famous designing /engineering Morrelli & Melvin from Huntington Beach, California as we have been doing for many years. Morrelli & Melvin are known for their America’s Cup involvement and many other successful multihulls projects such as: PlayStation, Gun boats and many others.
This design chosen for the Olympics results into:
Full compliancy with ISAF criteria
No interference with any other successful multihull class today.
Wave piercing design Wave piercing designs have a minimum draft resulting in a boat which obviously has less drag and tends less to rock, creating a more constant high speed than conventional designs.
Stiff platform
The Nacra 17 and the Nacra f16 are the stiffest production platforms available in their class, resulting in direct response in the boat and the energy of wind is maximum being transferred into forward motion. Light boat The Nacra 17 being light for its length ensures superb handling on and off the water Broader wind range during regatta’s Resulting in a agile and therefore challenging boat to sail
Robust
Strongly build in epoxy/glass/carbon and therefore durable and long lasting. Modern rig
Two piece carbon mast to ensure both safety (re-righting moment versus crew weight) and performance.Modern. High aspect ratio cut sails. Easy power up/power down. Engineered by one of the most experienced multihull sail makers in the world Curved foils
Nacra was the first company to successfully implement curved boards in 3 sails production multihulls. Over two years ago we launched the Nacra F20 Carbon successfully. This boat is being regarded as the benchmark for heavy crew in over 20 feet market. Why did we want to have curved dagger boards for our Olympic submission? ( And therefore created the Nacra 17). Curved boards lift the leeward hull out of the water reducing drag significantly. Creating pressure and therefore sooner hull flying and trapping. Sailing with curved boards extensively we came to additional findings:
- Sheet loads are reduced
- Crew weight less critical
Above facts results in:
Better control over the boat in windy conditions
Less critical who is skipper/crew either male /female
Challenging to find the last percentages of maximum performance
The Nacra 17 results into a agile high speed machine giving both sailors and spectators a spectacular close racing fleet.

Logistics
As the Nacra dealer network is spread out over the world. The logistics of boats and boatparts is well organized. There are four major distributors divided over four continents that supply the dealers individually within these countries or areas. This Nacra dealer network has evolved over the last 36 years that Nacra exist and some dealerships are even older being active into the maritime world.
Especially in the first year it will be of extreme importance to make sure the boat chosen gets spread out smoothly to MNA’s, sailors and other interested persons. Nacra provides the necessary logistics and supplies. This ensures that sailors will be benefit from a optimal logistic service. Important for the sailors is to get on the water a.s.a.p. with the new Olympic multihull in order to prepare for the Olympic cycle to come. Nacra can provide the numbers, the quality, the support to make that happen.
To ensure proper and accurate deliveries to the Nacra distributors, Nacra closely co-operates with reliable international freight forwarding companies. This ensures that either FCL- or LCL shipments are handled correctly. No need to worry about documents etc. We know about them and take care of them! In case one wants to take care of forwarding himself; it’s OK. We’ll take care of proper export packaging.
Nacra class association: INCA(International Nacra Class Association)
A Nacra class organization is in place taking care of the class championships, the class rules, and the members. With the Nacra Infusion being ISAF recognized as “international class” and more types of the program to follow, INCA keeps on organizing championships all over the world. More National Nacra class associations become member every year.

31-01-12 - OLYMPIC SUBMISSIONS NACRA
As of last Friday 20 January ( closing date to enter submissions) NACRA has submitted two boats for the OLYMPIC MULTIHULL MIXED CREW for the Olympic cycle of 2016 Rio de Jaineiro in Brazil.
Lots of work but not without reason. If a NACRA gets chosen we all win. Therefore we ask you to help us getting one of these boats chosen. How? By spreading this information.
Which boats did we submit?
ISAF has put out their criteria and these need to be followed as much as possible. Any point not taken seriously does not ‘ tick a box’ and can be bad. With some of these criteria questions were raised and we therefore contacted ISAF to ask questions and to get inside what they were really after. The new MIXED OLYMPIC boat has to carry a double crew being sailed by a female and male weighing average of 130 kilograms/ 286 LBS.
You can have a look at the link here: http://www.sailing.org/36988.php
NACRA F16
We choose for obvious reasons the NACRA F16 which fits the ISAF criteria perfectly. The only modification made is a TWO PIECE carbon mast which makes it quite expensive but we are following the ISAF criteria. Here are some of the bullet points you can use in your promotion:
Wave piercing hulls = Less drag through water
Super stiff platform = speed
Light weight = easy to handle
Robust = durable
Modern rig = designed with latest flow technology
Full compliancy with ISAF criteria
The Nacra F16 resulted in an exciting, challenging racing catamaran.
NACRA 17
For the other submission we designed a complete new boat which is called simply the NACRA 17! This boat fits within these criteria so good that we truly hope this will gets chosen. Of course we are okay with the F16 to get chosen but as CATAMARAN lovers we would like the NACRA 17 shine at the Olympics with its curved dagger boards! The Nacra 17 truly is showing what Multihull sailing 2.0 is all about, just like the F20 Carbon. The loads are adjusted on the NACRA 17 for a MIXED crew and we need your help to get this chosen. Here are some of the bullet points you can use in your promotion: The NACRA 17 is actually 17.6 foot long. Resulting in a more versatile platform that can carry the crew loads even better. This combined with the curved dagger boards makes it the Olympic multihull towards the future where the Elite sailing athletes of the world can run their campaigns with.
Wave piercing hulls = Less drag through water
Super stiff platform = speed
Light weight = easy to handle
Robust = durable
Modern rig = designed with latest flow technology
Full compliancy with ISAF criteria
No interference with any other class sailing out there today
Specifically designed for Elite athletes of the world and Olympic purpose
Curved boards lift the lee bow out of the water reducing drag significantly
Sheet loads are reduced = does not matter if male or female is skipper or crew
Better control in windy conditions
The Nacra 17 results into a agile high speed machine giving both sailors and spectators a spectacular close racing fleet.
We hope you like what we have done to ensure the stakes for NACRA are well presented and taken care of. Nacra is trying and pushing as hard as we can.
If you can make a difference, if you can have some positive influence to help NACRA into this OLYMPIC seat. Please do not hesitate to contact us to see what we can do.
There will be trials where every entered submission will be tried out. If you have sailors that you can send there and are NACRA sailors to help please do so.
Information can be find through the following link: http://www.sailing.org/tools/documents/MultihullRequestforProposalVersion2-[11766].pdf
We will be there in SANTANDER ( SPAIN) to support and sail maybe the new NACRA OLYMPIC multihull but we have a long road to go…..
TEAM NACRA SAILING
15-09-11 - Formula 16: New Nacra Design
For some time rumors have been going around that NACRA would be launching a new 16 footer. Well, here she is: The “NACRA F16 ”
F16 Class developments
NACRA Sailing international has been following the development of the F16 class meticulously. Mainly consisting of homemade boats at first, but now maturing as the F16 class received the ISAF status “recognized class” at the end of 2010. After receiving this news, NACRA Sailing International decided it was time to get involved and started developments. In NACRA’s opinion it will also lift the F16 class to the next level when “well established manufacturers ” like NACRA are entering this class towards the future.
Potential sales to five big groups:
The solo sailors that just want to go out whenever it suits her/him
Parents teaching their kids learning to race around the buoys
Sailors that just want a light multihull with large range of sail and crew weight versatility
Light racing teams that are too light for F18 but are searching for an exciting competitive boat
Couples/mixed teams that are pushing the boundaries of what is possible with a boat
Design team
The NACRA F16 is designed & engineered by the world famous multihull construction company Morrelli & Melvin based in Huntington Beach California USA. Peter Vink overseeing this F16 project as counterpart on behalf of NACRA Sailing International explains on the NACRA F16.
” In a young class, as the F16 class is, we had to come up with a design that needs to be the benchmark for a long time. A 16 footer that can be used by recreational sailors and/or racing teams, pushing the limits of what is possible. Just get onboard and start exploring, with the launch of this F16, NACRA is not one step ahead but miles ”
Successful combination
Morrelli/Melvin already proved to be a successful combination with NACRA with several earlier designs such as the NACRA Playcat (1995), NACRA Inter F18(1995), NACRA F18 Infusion(2005) & The NACRA F20 Carbon(2009). Both F18’s designed by Morrelli/Melvin became World Champion in the F18 class numerous times, the F20 Carbon is proving to be a true racing machine sailed by the more heavier sailors and winning events on line honors and handicap. Morrelli/Melvin is widely involved in the latest America’s cup designs and always on top of what knowledge is available to implement in new designs such as this NACRA F16.
Availability & Pricing
The NACRA F16 will become available for delivery in December 2011.
Catsailing news: Report Sent by Claus Denk ------ Here in Spain the different catamaran classes are combined into one "Catamaran Class" which is recognized oficially by the RFEV (Real Federación Española de Vela). The catamaran class has three annual events: the Spanish Cup, the Spanish Championship and a Long Distance Cup. In these events usually we gather in between 70-100 catamarans, each of them competing in "their" class: Hobie 16, A-class, Formula 18 and Interseries. In Interseries we include all cats which do not belong to the other categories, and they compete by the means of a rating system (SCHRS).
This weekend we had our national championship in Castelldefels, perfectly hosted by the Club Nautico Castelldefels. Nice weather, 10 knots the first day, light conditions around 4-5 knots the second day, and 8-12 knots the third day of the competition.
In A class we have a very high level, with some of the sailors in the top 20 in the last worlds. Manuel Calavia wins the spanish championship on a DNA with authority:
1 MANUEL CALAVIA ESP-1 R.C.N.BARCELONA - 9 points
2 JOSE ANTONIO LOPEZ BECERRA ESP-52 R.C.MARITMO BARCELONA - 19 points
3 GUSTAVO DORESTE ESP-72 R.C.MARITMO BARCELONA - 19 points
In Hobie 16 its the younger sailors that are taking the lead,
1 JACOBO MIQUEL LÓPEZ & PAUL STIEBLER CASTRO ESP-108815 - 14 points
2 MARC JOVANI LLOPIS & ROCIO PIRIS LLOPIS ESP-110227 - 17 points
3 JUAN LLABRÉS & ANA TOMAS MIRALLES ESP-109550 - 25 points
The exiting Formula 18 class is relatively young in Spain, and has been activated by the World Championships 2008 in Nigran:
1 LUIS SANTOS & JOAO DUARTE POR-3 13 points
2 TONI RIVAS MAS & JORDI SANCHEZ PEREZ ESP-21 19 points
3 ROBERT FIJNHEER & PETER STIEBLER CASTRO ESP-29 23 points
The winner of the race is a team from Portugal (portuguese sailors come to our regatas and we go to regatas in Portugal), Luis Santos and Joao Duarte on an Infusion. The best spanish team and as such the winners of the spanish championship are Toni Rivas and Jordi Sánchez on a Wildcat. Toni Rivas used to sail in the Tornado class, he was the sparring partner for Fernando Echavarri during the Bejing 2008 campaign.
The Interseries class is dominated by the FX-1 fleet, the winners with 8 bullets are Marc Verdaguer Foz with Jordi Booth.
04-05-11 - 5 NACRA F18 Infusion MK 2 finish top 9 at 2011 EUROCAT
On Sunday May 1, 2011 Team Boskalis Larsen/Frank won bronze at the season’s first international showdown of the F18 catamaran class. A fleet of 102 F18 crews lined up for the annual kick-off of the European competition in Carnac along the Brittany coast in France. After seven races, the Eurocat podium colored completely orange. Mischa Heemskerk and Bastiaan Tentij took the overall victory, followed by the 2009 world champions Coen de Koning and Thijs Visser.
"Actually it's a bit of a Boskalis podium, as they are all former team riders," says Larsen with a smile. "I am astonished, that the top three turned out to be hundred percent Dutch. Really cool! As Team Boskalis, sailing on the Nacra Infusion, we achieved our goal of three boats in the top fifteen. Adam Beattie and Jamie Leitner finished fourth and Ferdinand van West with occasional skipper Adam Piggott eighth. Jorden Veenman and Frank de Waard did well, but had bad luck in the final race with a broken joystick. Together they have clearly made a fresh start and that's very positive. "
Eurocat 2011 did not start off very well for the new duo Larsen/Frank. "No, we already scored an immediate black flag [disqualification due to an early start early] on the first day. You have to get rid of that and it worked, "says Larsen. Conditions were not easy, says the team leader: "On the first day there was little wind, which was variable in direction and strength. Sunday began with rain, but when the sun broke through we had great sailing weather with wind force four to five. We could surf down the waves and the committee managed to get four races in.” Larsen and Frank worked they way up to the bronze medal with a score of 3-13-11-6.
Long Distance Race
The long distance race on Saturday was a disappointment for Gunnar Larsen and Sam Frank. Their trapeze broke at the first windward mark, where-after they capsized. Larsen: "We could not continue like that, so we returned to the beach and prepared ourselves for the final races on Sunday." The other three Boskalis teams all finished in the top sixteen. Larsen: "They were among the front runners, forty minutes ahead of the boats behind." The line honors went to Peter Vink and Ilja Amels on the Nacra caron 20. The first F18 was the French duo Vaireaux/Petit, followed by the Dutchmen De Koning and Visser.
Do not lose focus
With the first success in his pocket, Larsen will focus on the rest of the season. "This is a dream start, but we cannot lose focus. The coming weeks will be devoted to training. We are working towards our objective; the 2011 Nacra Infusion Worlds on Texel and the F18 Worlds in Hungary."
